The Election Commission of India has named Ashok Kumar, a 2006 batch IAS officer, as the new Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, replacing R Alice Vaz. This decision was communicated to Delhi Chief Secretary Rajeev Varma by the Principal Secretary of the ECI, Rahul Sharma.
In response to the poll panel’s request, the Delhi government submitted a list of three IAS officers for consideration, with Ashok Kumar being one of the recommended candidates. The ECI’s directive stated that Ashok Kumar must relinquish any prior responsibilities under the Delhi government upon assuming his new role as the Chief Electoral Officer.
As per the ECI’s notification, Ashok Kumar is designated as the Chief Electoral Officer for the N.C.T. of Delhi under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The ECI further instructed the Chief Secretary to publish the appointment notification in the Delhi Gazette and ensure Ashok Kumar promptly assumes office.
