Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), announced a 50% discount on parking fees for electric vehicles (EVs), along with work-from-home options for staff and shuttle bus services between offices and residential areas to promote fuel conservation. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for fuel conservation, environmental protection, and digital work culture. The initiative aims to reduce commuting, conserve fuel, and enhance administrative efficiency through digital means.
To support eco-friendly transportation, the NDMC plans to provide a 50% concession on parking charges for EVs in its parking areas. Additionally, shuttle bus services will be introduced for employees residing in major residential colonies to reduce fuel consumption, traffic congestion, and vehicular pollution. The initial service will cater to areas like Palika Awas, Sarojini Nagar; Palika Gram, Laxmibai Nagar; Amrit Kal Niwas, Jor Bagh Road; and Bapu Dham Flats, Chanakyapuri.
Furthermore, the NDMC will expand the shuttle bus network to include 14 more residential locations, deploying a total of 16 buses. In a sustainability initiative, all Heads of Departments and officers will commute via public transport every Monday. Employees will be encouraged to utilize public transport, carpooling, and shared mobility systems to reduce reliance on private vehicles.
To minimize individual vehicle usage and fuel consumption, officers will use shared 16-seater vans for official field inspections and site visits. The Education Department will introduce online classes post-summer vacations and conduct awareness sessions for parents and students on digital learning, environmental responsibility, and sustainable practices. Chahal emphasized the NDMC’s role in setting an example by adopting environmentally responsible governance and sustainable practices as the civic body managing the heart of the national capital.
