The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) in Oslo to enhance technical expertise for National Highway infrastructure development. This collaboration aims to leverage NGI’s renowned proficiency in geotechnical engineering and natural hazard mitigation, especially in challenging terrains. The MoU, valid for five years, focuses on enhancing engineering capabilities in geologically sensitive areas.
NGI’s expertise will be instrumental in supporting various aspects of critical infrastructure projects, including tunnel construction, slope stability analysis, and monitoring of slopes. The institute will offer consultancy services for tunnel projects, feasibility studies, and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for upcoming tunnel initiatives. Additionally, NGI will provide guidance on structural assessment, safety audits of operational tunnels, and advanced slope stability assessments to identify potential hazards and suggest suitable mitigation measures.
The partnership will also involve the analysis and interpretation of InSAR data for slopes and the development of early warning systems to enhance infrastructure safety. Capacity building and knowledge exchange will be key components of this collaboration, with a focus on joint research and development efforts to reduce natural hazards. The NHAI and NGI will conduct joint workshops, seminars, technical training programs, and publish specialized technical literature to enhance the technical capabilities of the highway sector.
The arrangement between NHAI and NGI is non-exclusive, allowing both parties the flexibility to collaborate independently with other organizations as needed. This partnership signifies the increasing cooperation between India and Norway in infrastructure development, technology exchange, and sustainable engineering practices.
