The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to implement a barrier-less toll collection system at three major toll plazas in Tamil Nadu. The new Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system will be introduced at Nemili, Chennasamudram, and Paranur toll plazas to enhance highway infrastructure. This initiative aims to streamline traffic flow, reduce congestion, and minimize travel time for motorists in the state.
Unlike conventional toll plazas that require vehicles to slow down or stop for payments, the MLFF system allows vehicles to pass through at regular highway speeds without physical barriers. It utilizes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology connected to FASTag accounts and Artificial Intelligence-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras for seamless toll collection.
NHAI officials have started preparatory work in Tamil Nadu, marking locations for ANPR camera installations and related infrastructure. The physical setup is anticipated to be finished within four months, followed by software integration and testing before full-scale deployment. The dual-layer technology is designed to enhance accuracy and prevent revenue loss, with ANPR cameras serving as a backup system in case of FASTag detection failures.
The introduction of the MLFF system is expected to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by eliminating idling at toll plazas, thereby cutting down maintenance costs associated with physical toll infrastructure. Tamil Nadu’s adoption of this advanced tolling system places it at the forefront of India’s move towards smarter and more efficient highway travel.
