The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated action following the deadly ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district. The commission has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar and Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, requesting a detailed report on the incident within two weeks. The tragedy, which has resulted in nine fatalities, has raised significant concerns regarding human rights and workplace safety.
The NHRC has urged the state government to provide a detailed account of the incident, encompassing the events leading to the leak, actions taken by authorities, and the current status of the affected industrial workers. Additionally, the commission has requested information on the compensation and relief measures announced by the Tamil Nadu government for the families of the deceased workers. Authorities have been instructed to provide updates on the distribution of relief funds and the medical care offered to those exposed to the toxic gas.
The ammonia gas leak occurred at a private seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district, where numerous workers, predominantly women, were on duty. The workers were resting in a room near the factory premises when the gas leak transpired, exposing them to hazardous fumes. This incident prompted a swift emergency response, with affected workers promptly taken to hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur for treatment.
More than 70 workers have been hospitalized for medical attention and observation due to complaints of respiratory issues and other symptoms linked to ammonia inhalation. The victims, primarily migrant workers employed at the seafood processing plant, have highlighted the pressing need for enhanced industrial safety protocols and improved handling of dangerous chemicals in workplaces.
The Tamil Nadu government has initiated a formal inquiry into the accident and established a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ammonia gas leak. The committee’s mandate includes identifying potential lapses, assigning accountability, and proposing preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future. The NHRC has emphasized that it will review the report submitted by state authorities before determining any further course of action.
Amid escalating calls for stricter enforcement of workplace safety regulations and enhanced safeguards for industrial workers dealing with hazardous substances, the NHRC’s intervention underscores the critical importance of upholding human rights and ensuring a secure work environment.
