The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated action following the Taratala warehouse collapse incident in Kolkata. The NHRC has requested a comprehensive report from state authorities, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the Chief Secretary, within a two-week timeframe. This move comes after reports of five laborers losing their lives and twenty others sustaining injuries in the tragic incident on June 24, 2026.
The NHRC’s intervention was prompted by concerns over potential human rights violations arising from the collapse of an under-construction warehouse building in the Taratala area of Kolkata. The Commission has sought information on the investigative measures taken so far and the compensation provided to the victims and their families. The incident, reportedly caused by a faulty building plan, resulted in a significant loss of life and injuries, with several individuals still feared to be trapped under the debris.
Following the collapse, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attributed the accident to a flaw in the construction design, as reported by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the company owner, the OSD of the former mayor of KMC, and others involved in the construction process. Allegations have surfaced regarding the approval of the flawed design through illicit means, with a focus on potential financial irregularities in the design approval process.
In response to the incident, experts from Jadavpur University have commenced an inquiry into the construction practices and materials used in the warehouse. Professor Partha Pratim Biswas, specializing in construction engineering, visited the site to assess the construction methods, design specifications, and any potential negligence during the building process. The investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances leading to the tragic collapse and ensure accountability for the lapses identified.
