The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken a significant step by including Hafiz Saeed in the chargesheet related to the Pahalgam attack. Saeed, the leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba, will face an in-absentia trial, challenging Pakistan’s support for such elements involved in terror activities in India. The move aims not only to expose Pakistan’s stance but also to leverage it in international forums.
Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar, the chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed, have long avoided accountability for their roles in terror attacks within India, allegedly with backing from the Pakistani state. The NIA plans to request a non-bailable arrest warrant against Saeed, followed by a proclamation requiring his appearance at the court proceedings.
Despite knowing that Saeed is likely to evade the summons and court appearances, the NIA’s actions are intended to demonstrate his deliberate evasion of justice. This could lead to Saeed being declared a proclaimed offender, strengthening the case against him with the Interpol, where a Red Corner Notice (RCN) is already in place.
The trial in absentia of Hafiz Saeed is anticipated to be a turning point in India’s fight against terrorism, showcasing Pakistan’s reluctance to cooperate. India plans to document all trial-related communications through official channels, ensuring a solid and irrefutable record that Pakistan cannot refute.
