The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reached out to the police in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district for the case diary related to the recent violence in Beldanga. Despite the Supreme Court’s directive to submit the case diary by February 26, there has been no handover yet. The NIA is closely monitoring the situation to see how the local police respond.
Earlier in January, Beldanga witnessed unrest following the death of Alauddin Sheikh, a migrant worker. His demise sparked protests and blockades, leading to disruptions in train services and clashes with authorities. The incident escalated further the next day, with authorities claiming the unrest was premeditated. Subsequently, 36 individuals, including an AIMIM leader, were arrested in connection with the violence.
The Calcutta High Court’s ruling allowed the NIA to take over the investigation of the Beldanga violence case. Despite the state’s objections, the Supreme Court did not halt the NIA’s probe. The apex court instructed the NIA to present a sealed report to the Calcutta High Court, assessing the potential application of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in the case. The NIA’s possession of the case diary is deemed crucial for the ongoing investigation.
