North Korea has constructed new residences in Pyongyang for the families of North Korean soldiers who lost their lives during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as reported by state media. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, along with his daughter Ju-ae and other officials, attended the inauguration of the new Saeppyol Street on Sunday.
Kim Jong-un, during his speech at the ceremony, emphasized that the new street symbolizes the nation’s deep respect for the fallen soldiers who made significant sacrifices. He described the street as a symbol of pride for the current generation and a testament to the honor of Pyongyang and the state, specifically dedicated to the families of deceased soldiers and other combatants.
Kim assured that the government will ensure that these families receive necessary support and live with dignity, benefiting from state privileges and societal care. Following his address and the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Kim visited some of the families’ homes to provide solace, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
In a bid to commemorate its soldiers deployed in the conflict and garner internal backing, Kim had announced plans last year to establish this town. The exact number of homes constructed for the families was not disclosed in the report. North Korea, under a defense agreement with Russia, had sent around 14,000 soldiers to support Russian forces in Ukraine in 2024, resulting in the loss of over 6,000 North Korean soldiers, according to various sources.
