North Korea has opened a significant greenhouse farm in Sinuiju, a city in the northwest that was severely affected by flooding in 2024. Leader Kim Jong-un praised the project as a remarkable achievement just before the country’s upcoming party congress. The inauguration ceremony for the Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm was attended by Kim the day before, following the groundbreaking event in February 2025.
The country has focused on constructing a large greenhouse farm on Wihwa Island, an islet in Sinuiju, to address the flood damage from 2024. Kim expressed his contentment during a speech, highlighting the project as a new beginning for the residents who have long suffered from recurring floods. He emphasized that the project is a significant contribution to be presented at the Ninth Party Congress, a crucial event held every five years.
North Korea is preparing to host the ninth party congress, where it is expected to reveal its key policy directions for the next five years. The greenhouse farm construction in Sinuiju is a prominent initiative under Kim’s regional development strategy. The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim described the farm’s construction as one of the largest projects undertaken during the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea’s eighth term.
The upcoming ninth party congress is likely to showcase the greenhouse farm project as a major accomplishment under Kim’s leadership. In 2024, Kim announced a plan to establish modern factories in 20 cities and counties annually for a decade to enhance living standards in regional areas.
