The Alipurduar Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) achieved a significant milestone by completing 1,033 track meters in a single day using the Plasser’s Quick Relaying System (PQRS). This accomplishment, announced by NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, showcases the effective utilization of advanced mechanized track laying technology and efficient coordination among departments.
As part of its current track renewal initiative, Northeast Frontier Railway has undertaken a total of 290.8 km of track renewal activities within its jurisdiction. The division-wise progress includes substantial track renewals in various divisions, such as 51.33 km in Katihar Division, 29.77 km in Alipurduar Division, 75.19 km in Rangiya Division, 44.98 km in Lumding Division, and 69.96 km in Tinsukia Division, demonstrating a strategic approach to infrastructure enhancement.
The Plasser’s Quick Relaying System (PQRS) utilized by NFR comprises self-propelled cranes and is known for its compact size, leading to reduced maintenance costs. This system is widely used for both new track construction and the modernization of existing track infrastructure. By deploying PQRS, rail panels can be replaced more efficiently, allowing for the replacement of longer track lengths in shorter timeframes, as highlighted by Sharma.
According to the CPRO, the PQRS system enables the complete retrieval of old rail panels directly from the work site to the base, eliminating the need for additional freight carriage arrangements. The successful implementation of high-output track renewal operations underscores Northeast Frontier Railway’s commitment to adopting modern track renewal practices, enhancing asset reliability, and improving maintenance efficiency.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), headquartered in Maligaon, Guwahati, operates in the Northeastern states, seven districts of West Bengal, and five districts of north Bihar.
