International Day of Yoga was joyfully observed across Northeast India on Sunday, with leaders from Meghalaya and Manipur emphasizing the global significance of yoga and its positive impact on physical and mental health. The celebrations were part of the nationwide events led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who actively participated in the main Yoga Day program in Kolkata.
In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma graced the International Day of Yoga event in Shillong and expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for elevating yoga to a global platform. He appreciated the efforts made to ensure that June 21 is celebrated worldwide as International Day of Yoga.
The event in Shillong saw enthusiastic participation from armed forces personnel, state government officials, and the public, showcasing the widespread observance of Yoga Day in the region. Meanwhile, in Manipur, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted the increasing international recognition that yoga has garnered over the years.
Singh noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated International Yoga Day on June 21 with the support of 127 countries, leading to its inclusion in Olympic events. The Manipur Home Minister, Konthoujam Govindas Singh, emphasized the global celebration of International Day of Yoga, crediting Prime Minister Modi for popularizing yoga worldwide and securing United Nations’ recognition of June 21 as International Day of Yoga.
The significance of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, and a healthy lifestyle was underscored during the celebrations, with a call for individuals to incorporate yoga into their daily routines. Various institutions in the Northeast, including schools, colleges, government establishments, and public venues, organized yoga sessions as part of the nationwide festivities, echoing the message of wellness, discipline, and preventive healthcare that defines International Day of Yoga.
