The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has urged for capital punishment for those responsible for the death of Tripura student Angel Chakma, who was brutally attacked in Dehradun and later died in the hospital on December 26. NESO officials have submitted a letter to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami outlining their demands, including the need for swift justice for the perpetrators.
NESO has also called for the establishment of a special police station to address cases of racial discrimination against people from the northeastern states and the implementation of a stringent law, the Anti-Racism Act, to combat such discrimination. They have requested urgent intervention from the Chief Minister to ensure the safety and security of northeastern students and residents in Dehradun and other parts of Uttarakhand.
The organization strongly condemned the violence faced by people from the northeast in various parts of India, emphasizing the fatal consequences of such harassment. Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student and son of a Border Security Force constable, succumbed to his injuries after being attacked and subjected to racial slurs by a group of assailants on December 9.
