Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store has announced that Norway will participate in French President Emmanuel Macron’s nuclear deterrence initiative. This decision, however, will not alter Norway’s stance on nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Store, during his visit to Paris, highlighted the importance of Europe taking increased responsibility for its security.
While Norway will support Macron’s initiative, it remains firm on its policy against hosting nuclear weapons on its soil during peacetime. Additionally, Norway clarified that it will not provide financial backing to France’s nuclear weapons program. The new defense agreement signed between Norway and France in Paris solidifies mutual military assistance commitments.
France, led by President Macron, has been actively seeking European allies to bolster its nuclear deterrence strategy. Macron’s proposal includes enhancing France’s nuclear arsenal and introducing a European aspect to its deterrence approach. Notably, several European nations, such as Britain and Poland, have shown interest in collaborating with France on nuclear security.
