Former World No.1 and Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is set to make his comeback on the ATP Tour at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome this week. Djokovic, known for his success in major tournaments, will be practicing at the famous Piazza del Popolo in Rome on Tuesday. The Serbian player, aged 38, seemed relaxed as he interacted with fans and signed autographs during his practice session in the Italian capital.
Djokovic’s return to competitive tennis comes after his last match in March, where he faced a defeat in Indian Wells. Notably, he has not played a clay court match since his semi-final loss at Roland Garros last year. With an impressive record of 68-12 in Rome, Djokovic has claimed multiple titles at the ATP Masters 1000 event over the years.
The tennis star, who last participated in Rome in 2024, is scheduled to play against Marton Fucsovics or Dino Prizmic in his opening match at the Foro Italico. Djokovic, a 101-time tour-level titlist, is also expected to meet Italian player Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals. Musetti, a rising talent in Italian tennis, has been instrumental in the country’s recent success in the sport, alongside other top players like Jannik Sinner.
Italian tennis has seen a surge in achievements, with players like Sinner and Musetti making significant strides in their careers. Musetti, currently ranked World No. 10, has been a key contributor to Italy’s Davis Cup victories and has shown strong performances in major tournaments. As he gears up for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Musetti expresses optimism about the growing popularity and success of tennis in Italy, crediting players like Sinner for their contributions to the sport’s rise in the country.
