The Odisha Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has approved 10 key proposals across various departments, such as Law, Energy, and Fisheries. One significant approval is the Odisha Marine Fishing (Prohibition and Regulation) legislation, 2026, replacing the outdated Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982. This new law aims to enhance marine resource conservation, coastal security, and promote marine economy growth.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg highlighted the importance of the legislation, emphasizing its focus on deep sea fishing and shrimp export missions. The government envisions that this move will boost the state’s marine fisheries sector, aligning with the goal of achieving Rs 25,000 crore in seafood exports by 2036. Additionally, the Odisha Cabinet has agreed to repeal 358 Acts enacted between 1974 and 2025, which are now redundant or obsolete.
In line with recommendations from the Government of India, the Odisha Cabinet has also approved amendments to the Odisha Thermal Power Policy, 2008. These amendments include reducing the mandatory power allocation by Independent Power Producers to the government from 12–14% to 5%. The cabinet’s decisions aim to streamline regulations and support the state’s economic and environmental objectives.
