One person was injured in a shooting at New York City’s Times Square, as confirmed by local authorities. The incident took place around 3:40 p.m. local time on Thursday, shortly after the New York Knicks’ championship parade in Lower Manhattan. Video footage captured panic among the crowd as shots were fired, with people seen running for cover.
A suspect has been apprehended by the police in connection with the shooting. The New York Fire Department reported that the injured individual was taken to a hospital for treatment. The area of the shooting was swiftly cordoned off by the authorities for investigation, with reports indicating the presence of thousands of police officers in the city due to ongoing events.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) mentioned that the square was bustling with visitors attending World Cup events, many of whom had been in the city since the tournament commenced. Social media videos depicted the chaotic scene as gunfire rang out, causing widespread panic among tourists and onlookers. Witnesses observed the suspects fleeing the area, pursued by law enforcement officers.
The shooting incident is the second to occur in Times Square within a short period. Just days prior, on June 16, celebrations following the New York Knicks’ NBA championship win turned violent, resulting in another shooting. Footage from the earlier incident showed fans dispersing in fear as gunshots were heard, leading to a swift police response. A 17-year-old boy was wounded in that shooting and was promptly taken to a hospital for medical attention.
