Kentucky, Aug 16 (IANS) One person was killed and four others injured in a shooting at a park in Kentucky’s Lexington, US, local media reported, citing the police.

According to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers on Saturday evening (local time), the shooting took place at Charles Young Park in the city’s downtown, where five people were shot.

The injured were a 4-year-old, a 14-year-old and two adults. All were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries, Weathers said.

A large police presence remained in downtown Lexington Saturday night, with several surrounding roads closed, as officers continue their investigation, according to Xinhua news agency.

Authorities have not released any information about a suspect or the deceased. No arrests have been made.

In a separate incident on Saturday, five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University, prompting a temporary campus lockdown, the university said.

The shooting involved “multiple suspects,” and the campus was placed on lockdown, the university said on social media X.

When police arrived at the scene outside a university residence hall around 1:30 a.m. local time (0530 GMT), they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One person was in critical condition, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries, the university said in a later statement.

The campus lockdown has been lifted, while both county and campus police are investigating the shooting, according to the statement.

It was not immediately clear if any suspects were arrested.

Virginia State University is located in Chesterfield, Virginia. Classes for the new academic year were set to begin on Monday, CBS News affiliate WTVR reported.

Meanwhile, at least two students were injured Wednesday in a shooting at a high school in Houston County in the US state of Georgia, and a suspect was taken into custody.
