New Delhi, July 28 (IANS) Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that students will be able to get justice only when the established educational and governance system within the country undergoes a “drastic change”.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament House, Akhilesh Yadav said: “Not only the students, but even the family members also extended support, because of which the agitation became so big and finally the Centre had to give in (to their demands).”

The SP chief also said that apart from the resignation of a Minister, it is important to bring a change in the thought process as well.

He was referring to Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as Union Education Minister on Saturday following weeks of massive students’ agitation, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), over exam irregularities.

“When there is a drastic change in the established system, only then will the students get justice,” he said.

Referring to Uttar Pradesh, the SP chief claimed more than 20 exam paper leaks have taken place in the state. “A majority of youth and students who took part in the agitation were from Uttar Pradesh,” he added.

Moreover, Akhilesh Yadav said that the Centre was forced to bow down before the demands of the youth because several of the ruling alliance MPs “had started experiencing fears of a government collapse”.

“They were also scared about themselves,” he claimed.

“We are talking about 20 lakh students, who appeared in the NEET exam, which means almost one crore people were directly affected (due to the paper leak), including their family members. This is why the MPs might have been feeling the heat, and hence the government had to bow down,” he said.

Further, Akhilesh Yadav emphasised that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should have attended proceedings in the Parliament since the police is under the Home Ministry, which “unleashed brutality on the youth agitators”.

Meanwhile, the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, began in the Lok Sabha at 2 p.m.

Opening the debate, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government “finished the unfinished task” of the previous UPA government by bringing in stringent laws for the paper leak and other exam-related irregularities.
