Chennai, July 30 (IANS) A group of academics and education leaders has issued an open letter to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressing concern over her reported description of IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti as a “gaumutra expert” and urging greater respect for scientific discourse and academic freedom in public life.
Dated July 30, the letter says that Parliament should remain a forum where ideas are debated through evidence and reason rather than personal attacks or labels.
The signatories said that reducing a scholar to a caricature instead of engaging with the substance of his views undermines the principles of scientific inquiry and weakens the quality of democratic debate.
The letter highlights Kamakoti’s academic and professional credentials, noting that he leads one of India’s premier technological institutions.
It points out that he holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras, has authored more than 150 research papers, participated in more than 50 research and development projects, and received several honours, including the DRDO Academic Excellence Award and the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association’s Techno Visionary Award.
It also credits him with playing a key role in the development of India’s first industry-grade microprocessor.
The signatories said that, like any academic, Professor Kamakoti has the right to present hypotheses, discuss traditional knowledge systems and participate in scientific conversations.
They added that scientific temper, as envisaged in the Constitution, requires not only scepticism but also a willingness to examine claims objectively before accepting or rejecting them.
The letter adds that history has repeatedly shown that ideas once considered implausible have later gained scientific acceptance, while some widely accepted theories have eventually been discarded.
The academics also warned that remarks targeting scholars personally could discourage researchers and educators from participating in public discussions.
They said disagreements over evidence and methodology are a normal part of scientific progress, but criticism should focus on arguments rather than individuals.
Stressing the responsibility of elected representatives in shaping public discourse, the letter said political ridicule should not replace reasoned engagement on complex scientific issues.
It expressed hope that future debates, particularly in Parliament, would uphold the values of dignity, evidence-based discussion and mutual respect.
The open letter has been coordinated by former Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai Vice-Chancellor G.D. Yadav and Association of Indian Universities Secretary General Pankaj Mittal.
