Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, launched a scathing attack on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of political double standards and avoiding a direct public debate before the Assembly elections. Satheesan criticized Vijayan’s comments on veteran leader G. Sudhakaran, supported by UDF, labeling them as “cheap” and reflective of political insecurity. He highlighted the CPI(M)’s welcoming stance towards defectors from Congress and League while criticizing UDF’s support for those leaving CPI(M).
Raising concerns over ideological inconsistencies within CPI(M), Satheesan pointed out past positions that allegedly downplayed the communal aspect of the Jana Sangh. He also questioned the selective outrage over political alliances, noting CPI(M)’s silence on support from groups like SDPI and PDP. Satheesan challenged the government to a public debate on key projects, including Vizhinjam port, accusing CPI(M) of opposing initiatives during UDF’s tenure only to claim credit later.
Amid escalating tensions, the verbal sparring between the Opposition and the ruling party sets the stage for a fierce political showdown as Kerala gears up for the crucial electoral battle on April 9, where 140 new legislators will be elected.
