Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan, criticized Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s maiden Budget, questioning the government’s portrayal of a financial crisis and lack of vision for the state’s future. Vijayan stated that the financial crisis narrative seemed more like a political statement than a true reflection of Kerala’s financial status. He expressed concerns over the Budget’s allocation reductions in key sectors like traditional industries and agriculture.
Vijayan highlighted the Budget’s failure to prioritize welfare and development, especially in comparison to the previous government’s efforts to support the agrarian sector. He criticized the Budget for focusing on the past government’s shortcomings rather than presenting a forward-looking economic strategy. Vijayan emphasized the importance of a Budget outlining a future vision for Kerala, noting the need for a balanced approach between welfare and infrastructure development.
The Opposition leader raised objections to the Budget’s emphasis on the private sector, particularly in sectors like mining, maritime development, and healthcare. He voiced suspicions regarding initiatives that could potentially benefit private interests over public welfare. Vijayan also expressed concerns about the proposed maritime policy and fisheries sub-plan, suggesting they might prioritize private players over the interests of fishermen.
Questioning the Budget’s proposals for a land bank and a Health and Life Science City, Vijayan highlighted the lack of clarity in strengthening the public health system and potential implications for private sector dominance in healthcare. He also expressed doubts about the proposed think tank’s impact on the State Planning Board’s role, drawing parallels to the Centre’s abolition of the Planning Commission.
Regarding the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), Vijayan defended its role in infrastructure development across the state and criticized the Budget’s plan to restructure it. He dismissed the government’s claim of major surprises in the Budget, stating that the announcements did not offer anything exceptional. Vijayan cautioned that the Budget’s direction could weaken welfare priorities and increase reliance on private sector involvement, potentially creating challenges for Kerala’s future.
