Opposition MPs in the Rajya Sabha persisted with their protest on Tuesday, demanding a discussion on alleged police “brutality” during the July 20 demonstration in Delhi. Despite attempts to raise matters with the Chair’s permission, the session was disrupted by slogans and chaos, leading to an adjournment till 2 p.m.
Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan adjourned the House as orderly conduct of business did not improve, following which Rwangwra Narzari of UPP (L) from Assam was allowed to speak before the disruption escalated with opposition members creating a ruckus.
The ongoing standoff in the Upper House revolves around the Opposition’s demand for a debate on the Delhi Police’s actions during the July 20 protest, with members alleging excessive force. The Chair emphasized the need for orderly proceedings while allowing members to address public concerns with permission.
With the House adjourned for the afternoon, uncertainty looms over the fate of scheduled legislative and other business for the day, highlighting the tense atmosphere as the debate on police action takes precedence over the agenda.
