The Opposition, comprising 23 leaders from major parties, has written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and other judges, seeking the immediate suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They expressed concerns about alleged electoral process manipulation and the strain on the republic’s core pillars. In response, BJP’s MP Sudhanshu Trivedi criticized the Opposition’s letter, likening its tone to the Emergency era’s arrogance.
The Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit highlighted the Supreme Court’s stance on Bengal SIR, noting that while some voter deletions were justified, others were not. He emphasized the need for prompt action given the acknowledged errors in the system. Dikshit urged the court to establish a committee of experts to guide the government on this issue.
Amid disappointment, Shiv Sena-UBT’s Priyanka Chaturvedi expressed hope in the judiciary’s role. RJD’s Tanveer Hasan accused the BJP of using SIR to secure election victories, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter in upholding democracy. CPI-M’s Hannan Mollah echoed concerns of Constitutional misuse and stressed the judiciary’s crucial role in upholding democracy.
In response, BJP’s MP Trivedi condemned the Opposition’s letter, denouncing it as an attempt to undermine democracy. He criticized the parties involved for disregarding public sentiment and treating their organizations as personal fiefdoms.
