Opposition members in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly left the session after the Speaker dismissed a motion to discuss the rising issue of farmer suicides in the state. They also raised concerns about Congress MLA Sajid Pathan receiving death threats from the Bishnoi gang. Congress Legislature Party Leader, Vijay Wadettiwar, pushed for an immediate debate on the agricultural crisis, citing recent farmer suicides in Latur.
The Opposition criticized the government for neglecting pressing matters like agricultural distress and farmer suicides, emphasizing the need for urgent discussions. Wadettiwar demanded clarity from the Maharashtra government on the situation and urged the implementation of relief measures promptly. He accused the administration of overlooking the escalating farmer suicides due to financial hardships.
The tension escalated as Wadettiwar highlighted the security threat to MLA Pathan from the Bishnoi gang, calling for a thorough investigation and enhanced security. He criticized the security priorities, comparing the protection provided to a film director with that of threatened Congress MLAs. The Speaker assured that the safety of elected representatives is the government’s top priority, promising appropriate security measures based on threat assessments.
Despite the Speaker’s reassurance, the Opposition, prioritizing the welfare of farmers, walked out in protest against the denial of a structured debate on the agricultural crisis.
