More than 2.36 lakh individuals in Gujarat, including Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, ministers, senior bureaucrats, and citizens, have engaged in the state’s ongoing self-enumeration campaign for Census 2027. The campaign, initiated on May 17 and running until May 31, enables residents to submit their census details online before the formal enumeration process begins next year. Ahmedabad leads in participation with over 42,000 registrations, followed by Surat, Vadodara, Anand, Rajkot, and Mehsana.
Census Director Sujal Mayatra expressed satisfaction with the strong citizen response across Gujarat and urged broader participation before the deadline. He emphasized that if a maximum number of citizens complete the self-enumeration forms accurately from home using technology, it would ease the workload on census staff and expedite operations. Government employees are also expected to participate significantly in the upcoming days.
Government employees from the Health and Education Departments will fill out self-enumeration forms on May 29, while those from the Police Department will do so on May 30. The self-enumeration system for Census 2027, a first-time inclusion, allows citizens to submit details online through a designated QR code. Respondents will receive an SE ID upon completion, to be shared with enumerators during official visits for verification and database entry.
The use of digital systems and mobile apps in 16 languages, including Gujarati, is anticipated to streamline data collection and reduce fieldwork. Data collection will also be feasible offline through Android and iOS applications. The census process in Gujarat will occur in two phases: House Listing and Housing Census (HLO) from June 1 to June 30, followed by Population Enumeration (PE) from February 9 to February 28, 2027, which will include the caste census exercise.
