More than 3.74 lakh individuals in Gujarat have finished self-enumeration before the commencement of the first phase of Census 2027 on June 1. This marks the beginning of what officials term as “India’s first fully digital census exercise.” The census, the 16th in India’s history and the eighth since Independence, will be conducted in two phases across Gujarat and the rest of the country.
Census Director Sujal Mayatra has announced the start of the exercise and encouraged all citizens to take part in the nationwide enumeration program. The House Listing and Housing Census will occur from June 1 to June 30, where enumerators will pose 33 questions covering housing conditions, family details, drinking water sources, toilet facilities, and other assets.
The first phase, known as the House Listing and Housing Census (HLO), will entail gathering information on housing conditions, household composition, access to drinking water, sanitation facilities, and other assets. This survey will span all districts, municipal corporations, municipalities, and villages in Gujarat.
The second phase, involving Population Enumeration (PE) and caste enumeration, is scheduled between February 9 and February 28, 2027. Caste data collection will be conducted concurrently with the nationwide population count during this phase. Mayatra highlighted that population enumeration, caste enumeration, and the caste census exercise will be carried out during this stage.
