Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is facing potential widespread unrest as the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has called for a major lockdown protest on June 9 due to 38 unmet demands. The region has been plagued by issues such as electricity shortages, inflation, unemployment, resource exploitation, and political marginalization, leading to growing frustration among the populace. Despite the Muzaffarabad Agreement of last year, concerns persist over Islamabad’s control mechanisms, limited autonomy, and the stark contrast between Pakistan’s portrayal and the harsh reality in PoK.
Protests have already commenced in various parts of PoK ahead of the planned June 9 shutdown, reflecting the escalating tensions and discontent among the residents. The JAAC has warned of extensive demonstrations, including protests, strikes, and sit-ins, if their demands are not met. The upcoming agitation is centered on addressing 38 specific demands related to governance, basic rights, and long-standing socio-economic grievances in the region.
The situation in so-called Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is growing increasingly serious, with the JAAC accusing the Pakistani government of repeatedly failing to fulfill the aspirations of the region’s people. The committee has announced plans for various forms of protests, including a shutdown, to push for the implementation of their demands. Reports indicate that telecom and internet services have been suspended in PoK, and security forces have been reinforced in anticipation of the protest, heightening concerns of further unrest.
JAAC leaders have criticized Pakistan for not honoring its commitments on constitutional, electoral, and governance reforms, instead resorting to suppression tactics. Residents have been advised to stockpile essential supplies for a potential prolonged shutdown, with political rallies prohibited until authorities address their grievances. The JAAC’s 38-point charter, unveiled last year, encompasses a wide range of demands, including economic reforms, job reservations, and financial aid for various sectors in PoK.
