Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that 10.41 crore LPG connections have been provided under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to offer subsidized cooking gas to needy families. The scheme aims to cover 10.6 crore families, with Puri highlighting its success in ensuring a reliable supply of clean cooking fuel.
Puri credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for transforming clean cooking into an essential infrastructure through the Ujjwala scheme. The government is making LPG more affordable for the underprivileged by offering a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to nine refills annually, leading to a significant increase in LPG consumption.
To enhance LPG accessibility and clear pending applications, the government sanctioned an additional 25 lakh LPG connections in the fiscal year 2025-26. Improved subsidy targeting and transparency were achieved through accelerated Aadhaar authentication, covering a substantial percentage of both PMUY and non-PMUY consumers.
Consumer safety measures were strengthened nationwide through the Basic Safety Check campaign, conducting over 12.12 crore free safety inspections and replacing more than 4.65 crore LPG hoses at discounted rates. These initiatives have significantly raised awareness and safety standards in domestic LPG usage.
