Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir met during the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. They focused on enhancing collaboration in clean energy, fisheries, sustainability, geothermal energy, and carbon capture and storage. This marked their first meeting since Frostadottir took office, with PM Modi acknowledging her as Iceland’s youngest Prime Minister.
PM Modi expressed India’s appreciation for the friendship with Iceland and highlighted the potential for stronger ties in various sectors, including the Blue Economy. The leaders discussed the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) and its role in boosting trade, investment, and manufacturing cooperation. They also explored opportunities for cooperation in areas like geothermal energy, fisheries, innovative technologies, culture, tourism, and Arctic research.
The meeting also saw PM Modi extending an invitation to Frostadottir to visit India at a convenient time. The discussions included the participation of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and other officials. Diplomatic relations between India and Iceland date back to 1972, with both countries sharing values of democracy, equality, human rights, and the rule of law. Iceland has shown support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the expanded UN Security Council.
