Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently met in New Delhi and expressed serious concerns about the East and South China Sea situation. In a Joint Statement, they emphasized their strong opposition to any unilateral actions that threaten safety, freedom of navigation, and attempts to alter the status quo by force.
The leaders highlighted their worries about the increasing militarization of disputed features and underscored the need to peacefully resolve maritime disputes according to international law, particularly UNCLOS. They also addressed North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, reiterating their commitment to the country’s complete denuclearization in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Additionally, both Prime Ministers urged all UN Member States to fulfill their international obligations under UNSC resolutions by implementing sanctions, including the prohibition on arms transfer to or from North Korea. They emphasized the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and expressed concerns about the situation in Myanmar, calling for the cessation of hostilities and inclusive dialogue for a peaceful resolution.
PM Modi and PM Takaichi emphasized sustainable peace and stability in the Middle East, highlighting the importance of safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stable energy supply chains, and upholding international law. They also stressed the need to advance the Comprehensive Plan for Gaza’s reconstruction and support a two-State solution for lasting peace in the region.
Furthermore, the leaders voiced support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. They welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region.
