Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised Indian weightlifters Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam and Valluri Ajaya Babu for their achievements at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Bindyarani won the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting category with a total lift of 199kg, securing 87kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk. She had previously won a silver medal in the 2022 edition in Birmingham in the 55kg weight-class.

PM Modi congratulated Bindyarani for her bronze win, highlighting her hard work and determination that led to success. Ajaya Babu, on the other hand, set a Commonwealth Games record of 149kg in the snatch and lifted 181kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 330kg. He narrowly missed the gold in the men’s 79kg competition by just 1kg behind Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry Hidayat.

In another event, Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched silver in the women’s 53kg category on her Commonwealth Games debut. Moving up from the 49kg category to accommodate Mirabai Chanu, she achieved a personal best total of 199kg, with 88kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk. Mirabai Chanu, Rishikanta Singh, and Muthupandi Raja also secured medals in their respective weightlifting events at the Games.
