Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in Vadodara, emphasized the importance of self-reliance in consumption habits and financial discipline. He urged citizens to reduce dependence on imported goods, gold purchases, and fuel consumption. Modi highlighted the need to promote domestic products and strengthen local industries, advocating for the “Vocal for Local” initiative to become a mass movement.
The Prime Minister expressed concerns about the pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves due to increased use of foreign goods. He specifically addressed the issue of gold imports, stating that a significant amount of national resources is spent on this metal. Modi called for restraint in non-essential purchases like gold, suggesting that such expenditures be postponed until global conditions stabilize.
In addition to gold, Modi also mentioned the impact of edible oil consumption on health and imports. He encouraged moderation in consumption habits, emphasizing the benefits of reducing individual consumption for both personal well-being and the national economy. Furthermore, he reiterated his appeal to decrease dependency on petrol and diesel, promoting the use of public transport, electric vehicles, and shared mobility options.
Highlighting the economic implications of overseas travel and destination weddings, Modi urged people to consider hosting such events in India to prevent significant foreign exchange outflow. He emphasized the cultural and scenic richness of India, suggesting that domestic tourism should be prioritized. Modi also encouraged farmers to adopt natural farming practices and reduce chemical fertilizer use for the long-term health of agriculture.
