Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Kolkata, highlighted the importance of a country being a capable maritime power to ensure peace and progress. He commissioned three warships into the Indian Navy, including the INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray, built by GRSE Ltd. These vessels showcase India’s self-reliance in shipbuilding, with significant indigenous content.
PM Modi stressed the significance of maritime power for economic growth, citing the role of seas in connectivity, resource access, and national security. He praised the indigenous construction of the warships, emphasizing India’s shift from being a defense equipment buyer to a manufacturer and exporter. The Prime Minister also underlined the employment opportunities and economic benefits generated by the domestic shipbuilding sector.
India’s focus on enhancing its maritime capabilities was evident as PM Modi mentioned the modernization of ports, development of logistics networks, and the allocation of Rs 70,000 crore for shipbuilding. He expressed pride in the growth of India’s defense exports, which have increased significantly over the years. PM Modi acknowledged West Bengal’s contribution to the maritime sector and highlighted the state’s potential in shipbuilding talent and skills.
