Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the passing of former Qatar Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, hailing him as a visionary leader and a genuine friend. Sheikh Hamad, aged 74, passed away on Sunday morning as announced by the Amiri Diwan, with prayers for his soul’s peace and blessings for his contributions to his nation. PM Modi extended his sympathies to Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the royal family and citizens of Qatar, remembering Sheikh Hamad’s leadership and friendship during his visit to Qatar in February 2024.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani governed Qatar from 1995 to 2013, passing the leadership to his son Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Under his rule, Qatar experienced significant progress in economic, social, and cultural spheres, elevating its stature globally and in the Arab world. Born in Doha in 1952, he received his education locally before attending the British Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
Having graduated in 1971, Sheikh Hamad joined the Qatar Armed Forces, rising to the rank of Major General due to his contributions to military development. His tenure included roles as Heir Apparent, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Planning, focusing on Qatar’s economic and social policies. Taking office in June 1995, he initiated developmental and reform initiatives that shaped Qatar’s trajectory.
