Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to extend congratulations to the Manipuri film “Boong” for clinching the ‘Best Children’s & Family Film’ award at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). The movie, featuring a talented cast including Gugun Kipgen, Bala Hijam, and others, tells the story of a young boy’s journey to reunite his family amidst social tensions in Manipur. Director Lakshmipriya Devi expressed her pride in the film’s recognition, calling it a tribute to her homeland.
The film competed against notable international titles like “Arco”, “Lilo & Stitch”, and “Zootropolis 2” at the prestigious event. Premiering at the Discovery section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2024, “Boong” has garnered acclaim for its portrayal of Manipur’s societal challenges. Lakshmipriya Devi, in her acceptance speech at BAFTA, emphasized the film’s deep connection to Manipur, a region she described as troubled and often overlooked in India.
Accepting the award at BAFTA, Lakshmipriya Devi shared her gratitude, likening the film’s journey to climbing an unknown mountain. She acknowledged the support received from the jury and BAFTA, underscoring the significance of the recognition for a small film like “Boong”. The filmmaker’s heartfelt message included a plea for peace in Manipur, emphasizing the importance of bringing stability to her homeland.
