Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Governor of Victoria, Margaret Gardner, in Melbourne to discuss enhancing educational cooperation between India and Victoria. The focus was on strengthening academic collaborations, research partnerships, and increasing student mobility. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the importance of the educational linkages between the two regions as a key aspect of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The Indian Consulate General in Melbourne noted the significant role of the education industry in Victoria’s economy, with Melbourne being recognized as Australia’s top student city. Currently, there are around 59,000 Indian international students studying in various universities in Victoria, representing the largest group of Indian students in Australia. The students predominantly choose fields like Management, Commerce, Information Technology, Engineering, Health, Food, Hospitality, and Engineering & Related technologies.
In addition to the meeting with the Governor of Victoria, Prime Minister Modi also held the 3rd India-Australia Annual Summit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The summit aimed at strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations by reviewing progress across various sectors such as trade, investment, clean energy, defence, education, skills, and people-to-people ties. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
