Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the extension of the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament by three days to fast-track the implementation of 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies. The additional days, April 16, 17, and 18, aim to prepare for enforcing the reservation from the 2029 general elections.
PM Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to enacting the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam” to ensure one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies. He urged for 33% of parliamentary seats to be allocated to women starting from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The special parliamentary sitting will focus on necessary provisions, including legal and constitutional measures, to make the reservation effective. PM Modi outlined two main objectives for the extended session: assuring that no state loses seats due to population control efforts and considering creating additional women-reserved seats to maintain existing representation while increasing space for women.
PM Modi called for bipartisan support, urging all political parties, including the Opposition, to participate constructively in advancing women’s rights and empowerment. He stressed the importance of timely implementation of the legislation to enhance “Nari Shakti” and promote inclusive development.
