Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is revered in Islam for its sanctity. It is closely linked to Ashura, a period commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in the Battle of Karbala. During this time, religious ceremonies, mourning rituals, and prayer sessions are held worldwide to honor his sacrifice.
The term “Muharram” translates to “forbidden,” denoting its sacred status as one of Islam’s four holy months when warfare is traditionally prohibited. Muslims are encouraged to intensify their devotion through worship, prayer, and introspection throughout this revered month.
Marking the Islamic New Year, Muharram signifies the start of the Hijri calendar based on lunar months. While the first day symbolizes reflection on Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) teachings, the 10th day, Ashura, holds profound spiritual significance, commemorating Imam Hussain’s martyrdom and embodying principles of sacrifice, faith, and resistance against injustice.
