Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998, emphasizing India’s resolute stance to the world. The tests, known as Pokhran-II or Operation Shakti, were a series of five underground nuclear tests conducted by India in May 1998 at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. These tests, authorized by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, established India as a nuclear-armed state and are celebrated annually as National Technology Day.
During the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav celebrations on May 11, PM Modi recalled the significance of the nuclear tests, highlighting India’s determination to pursue its nuclear ambitions despite global pressure. He reiterated that the tests on May 11 and May 13 showcased India’s strength and resilience against external pressures. PM Modi also emphasized the importance of the nuclear mission, named ‘Operation Shakti,’ as a symbol of India’s self-belief and strategic progress.
The Prime Minister reflected on the aftermath of the tests, noting the economic sanctions and pressures imposed by global powers. Despite facing immense international scrutiny, PM Modi praised the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the BJP government for prioritizing national interests above all else. He underscored that India’s unwavering resolve during the nuclear tests demonstrated the nation’s sovereignty and independence from external influences.
