In his recent ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recounted a touching story of patriotism and dedication from Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu. He met veteran educationist Gomatam Veeraraghavan Girija, also known as Girija Amma, whom he first encountered nearly three decades ago. Girija Amma is the driving force behind the renowned Gopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya, a respected educational institution known for its excellence.
Inspired by the radio address, Girija Amma initiated a special program encouraging students in her schools to donate one rupee daily towards the welfare of Indian soldiers. Over a year, each student contributed Rs 365, resulting in a total collection of approximately Rs 40 lakh. Girija Amma presented this amount to the Prime Minister in the form of a cheque.
Reflecting on his interaction with Girija Amma, PM Modi expressed deep admiration for her unwavering love for the country. He also acknowledged the significant contributions of the Hindu Vidyalaya network in Chennai, which recently marked its 50th anniversary.
The Prime Minister commended Girija Amma, the institution’s staff, and the students involved in this noble cause. He encouraged citizens to recognize and support such altruistic endeavors in their communities, emphasizing that India’s advancement hinges on the collective strength and goodwill of its people. PM Modi promised to share more uplifting stories in the next ‘Mann Ki Baat’ episode.
