Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged voters to actively participate in the ongoing second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. He emphasized the significance of a robust and inclusive democracy, especially calling upon the women and youth of West Bengal to exercise their voting rights in large numbers. The current phase of elections is marked by a significant contest between Trinamool’s Mamata Banerjee and BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari for the Bhabanipur seat.
Voting is currently underway in 142 constituencies across seven districts, with the Trinamool having won 123 seats, the BJP 18, and the Left one in the previous 2021 Assembly polls. Notably, the Bhabanipur seat has been a stronghold for the Trinamool since 2011, held by party chief Mamata Banerjee. The Election Commission of India records a total of 3,21,73,837 registered electors in these constituencies, representing nearly 64% of the total population across the areas.
In this phase, voters have started casting their votes at designated polling stations, such as the one at Hiralal Majumdar College in the 112 Kamarhati Assembly constituency. All registered electors have been provided with Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) as confirmed by the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The age demographics of voters include 3,243 individuals aged 100 years or above, 1,96,801 aged 85 or above, 146 Non-Resident Indian (NRI) voters, and 39,961 service voters.
A total of 1,448 candidates are contesting in these 142 Assembly constituencies, with 1,228 male candidates and 220 female candidates. The constituencies going to polls include 107 in the general category, 34 reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), and one reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST). The election results for this phase are scheduled to be announced on May 4.
