Police in Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir, have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against an individual for running a fake WhatsApp account in the name of the Senior Superintendent of Police. The accused, Sameer Ali Bhat, was found sharing chat screenshots from the fake account to pose as a close aide of the SSP and influence people.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the individual, Sameer Ali Bhat, had multiple FIRs against him and was using the mobile number +91-9622126997 for the fake SSP Budgam account. He misrepresented himself as a close associate to gain unwarranted influence.
The rise in cyber crimes, online frauds, and scams in J&K, similar to the national trend, is attributed to the widespread use of the internet and social media. While these platforms offer numerous benefits, they also pose significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.
To combat such misuse, the Budgam Police Station has lodged FIR No. 90/2026 under Section 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act. The public is advised to be cautious of such impersonation tactics and to contact official numbers listed on government websites for any communication with authorities.
