Police are investigating Rep. Kang Sun-woo from the ruling Democratic Party for allegedly accepting 100 million won from a Seoul city councilor. The investigation follows a complaint filed by opposition lawmakers accusing Kang and the council member of bribery. Kang is alleged to have received the money through an aide during the 2022 regional elections.
The case gained attention when it was revealed that Kang had discussed the issue with Rep. Kim Byung-kee, also from the same party, who is facing misconduct allegations. Allegations surfaced that Kang and Kim discussed an incident where a local aide received and retained 100 million Korean won from Council member Kim before the April 2022 local elections.
Amidst the controversy, the Seoul City Party of the Democratic Party of Korea announced Council member Kim as the sole nominee for the Seoul City Council member position in Gangseo District. This decision sparked criticism as no action was taken to exclude the candidate despite the money exchange controversy.
Additionally, police are set to question an activist who claimed that Rep. Kim met with the former CEO of Coupang Corp. to influence personnel decisions related to his ex-aide employed by the company. Rep. Kim resigned from the ruling party’s floor leadership amidst growing allegations of misconduct, including favoritism and misuse of authority.
