Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Amaravati capital region have filed three cases related to clashes that occurred during a visit by leaders of the opposition YSR Congress Party on Saturday. One case was registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against YSRCP leaders based on a complaint by a resident of Penumaka named Manikyam. Another case involves YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu, who was accused by Tadepalli Circle Inspector Virendra Babu of obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duties.
A separate case was lodged against Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders following a complaint by YSRCP leader Narayana Murthy for causing damage to car windows. The clashes erupted during a visit by YSRCP leaders and members of the CRDA Farmers Protection Committee to the capital region, leading to tension and confrontations. The YSRCP delegation visited Undavalli and Penumaka after being “invited” by farmers protesting against alleged forced land acquisition.
According to YSRCP representatives, farmers were under pressure for not giving up their lands, with their fields being surrounded by dug-up soil, hindering cultivation. The opposition party accused TDP activists of assaulting its leaders, farmers, and vehicles by throwing stones and eggs, resulting in several damaged vehicles. YSRCP also claimed that some police personnel present at the scene were injured while trying to restore order.
Meanwhile, Botsa Satyanarayana, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, denounced the attack on YSRCP leaders and urged strict action against the perpetrators. He criticized Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, alleging that the state’s law and order situation has deteriorated, leading to a state of lawlessness. Satyanarayana stated that YSRCP members were visiting Penumaka at the locals’ invitation to witness the alleged harassment they were facing.
