Police in Murshidabad district have started seizing assets owned by the father-in-law of the daughter of Humayun Kabir, a suspended Trinamool Congress leader and Bharatpur MLA, who is accused of drug trafficking. The properties, valued at around Rs 10 crore, belong to Shariful Islam, the father-in-law of Kabir’s daughter, Nazma Sultana. Allegations suggest that Shariful Islam amassed wealth through illegal drug activities over the past seven years.
Authorities claim that a relative of Kabir’s son-in-law was arrested last year with drugs near his residence, leading to investigations that allegedly linked Shariful Islam to the drug trade. It is reported that the profits from drug trafficking were used to buy land, houses, and commercial properties in various areas, including Naldahari in Lalgola.
The police have identified 17 properties belonging to Shariful Islam and have begun the process of confiscation with official permission. Some of the properties include houses currently rented out to a nationalized bank. Kabir, who was suspended from the Trinamool Congress, has criticized the police action, stating that it is a politically motivated move to target his family.
Kabir denied any business ties between his daughter’s father-in-law and the arrested individual, emphasizing that the case is fabricated to harass them politically. He asserted that his son-in-law is engaged in legitimate businesses and pays taxes regularly. The police, on the other hand, maintain that the property confiscation is being carried out lawfully as part of an anti-drug operation.
