For almost fifty years, political leaders in West Bengal stood against the Centre, akin to the Gaulish village in Asterix-Obelix, defending their territory fiercely but facing internal conflicts that weakened their stronghold. The Left Front was followed by the Trinamool Congress government, and now, with rising dissent among the populace, change is sought in the last major eastern bastion. The rise of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, and the alienation of leaders like Mukul Roy, Saumitra Khan, and Suvendu Adhikari have marked significant shifts in the state’s political landscape.
The Nandigram movement, pivotal in toppling the Left Front in 2011, led by Suvendu Adhikari, saw him later feeling sidelined within the party. His move to the BJP gained national attention, especially after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 elections. Similarly, Saumitra Khan shifted to the BJP, citing neglect within the Trinamool Congress. Mukul Roy, a key figure, also left the party, reportedly due to disagreements with Abhishek Banerjee’s growing influence.
Mukul Roy, known for his election management skills, played a crucial role in both the Trinamool Congress and BJP. Despite facing backlash over the Narada sting operation, he remained a significant figure. As Mamata Banerjee’s control over the party weakened, internal conflicts escalated, leading to the emergence of two power centers within the party, known as the “Kalighat” and “Camac Street” groups. The situation mirrors the dynamics of past Left Front governments, with organizational and administrative leadership structures operating independently.
Abhishek Banerjee’s increasing influence and Mamata Banerjee’s perceived weakening grip have fueled public clashes and allegations of corruption. The party’s internal strife has drawn parallels to historical power struggles, with Mamata Banerjee facing challenges in maintaining control. The evolving political scenario in West Bengal reflects a narrative of shifting powers and internal discord, reminiscent of the Gaulish village’s eventual downfall.
