A series of postpartum health complications in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, persists as five more women have developed serious medical conditions after childbirth in the past two days. These women are currently receiving treatment at Umaid Hospital, bringing the total number of similar cases reported in the city to 13 within the last month. Hospital authorities mentioned that these women were referred from various healthcare facilities after their conditions worsened following delivery.
Umaid Hospital Superintendent Dr. Mohan Makwana stated that one patient is on ventilator support, while three others are under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Another patient has been admitted to the general ward and is in stable condition. All five women experienced severe postpartum bleeding, leading to complications that required advanced medical care.
Dr. Makwana clarified that there is no current evidence indicating that the medications given to the patients caused the complications, as all patients followed the same treatment protocol. However, he mentioned that an investigation would be initiated if directed by the authorities. The five women were referred from different hospitals across Rajasthan, each with specific medical issues ranging from cardiac complications to low platelet count, necessitating varying levels of care.
The recent incidents follow a previous episode on June 20, where eight women faced health complications after Caesarean deliveries at Pawta District Hospital. Although these women recovered later, investigations revealed no issues with the operation theatre, medicines, or laboratory tests. The recurrence of similar cases has raised concerns about maternal healthcare and referral systems once again. With the addition of the latest five patients, a total of 13 women have encountered serious postpartum complications in Jodhpur within a month.
The city is also under scrutiny for a separate case involving an alleged wrong blood transfusion at Umaid Hospital. A woman named Dhapu, who gave birth on July 11, received an incompatible blood group transfusion leading to kidney complications. An enquiry committee found that the error occurred due to the lack of proper verification and cross-matching procedures. The report identified lapses by resident doctors, laboratory technicians, and nursing staff, with disciplinary action anticipated.
While hospital authorities attribute the recent cases mainly to excessive blood loss and pregnancy-related complications, the repeated incidents within a short period have highlighted concerns about maternal healthcare practices in the state. Health officials are closely monitoring the affected women, and investigations into the blood transfusion error and recent postpartum complications are ongoing.
