The power sector’s growth is crucial, with Power Minister Manohar Lal stressing the importance of robust Discoms for enhanced services and consumer care. Speaking at the ‘Electricity Distribution Industry Conference ‘EDICON: 2026,’ Lal highlighted the sector’s increasing significance in the evolving economy. He urged State Electricity Regulatory Commissions to adopt cost-reflective tariffs and provide targeted subsidies to those in need under the Electricity Act.
Lal unveiled the inaugural annual report of the All India Discoms Association (AIDA), outlining ongoing efforts to enhance supply reliability and operational efficiency. Recognizing excellence, he honored 12 Discoms from various states for their outstanding performance. Notably, the power distribution sector achieved a milestone by reporting a collective net profit of Rs 2,701 crore in FY2024-25, a significant turnaround from previous years of losses.
The positive financial performance marks a notable shift for distribution utilities, which had long struggled with deficits post-unbundling and corporatization. This achievement signifies a new era for India’s power distribution system, reflecting the government’s reform initiatives to bolster the sector’s financial health and efficiency.
