President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to former President Dr. Zakir Husain on his birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Dr. Husain, the third President of India, served from May 13, 1967, until his passing on May 3, 1969. He was the first Muslim to hold this position in the country.
Dr. Zakir Husain, born on February 8, 1897, in Hyderabad, was not only a prominent Indian politician but also a respected educationist and intellectual. He co-founded the National Muslim University, later known as Jamia Millia Islamia, showcasing his dedication to education and intellectual pursuits.
Throughout his career, Dr. Husain emphasized the importance of education in nation-building. He significantly contributed to Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia as their Vice-Chancellor, fostering inclusive learning environments and visionary leadership.
In addition to his educational endeavors, Dr. Zakir Husain actively participated in India’s freedom struggle. His presidency, marked by a strong commitment to democratic values and education, ended tragically when he passed away on May 3, 1969. His legacy in education and vision for a more educated India continue to inspire generations.
